patient and staff

Congratulations! On behalf of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, we welcome you to stay and deliver your baby in Landstuhl, Germany!

The Storknest Program is available for patients within the Europe and Africa regions in remote areas who do not have obstetrical care available to them or where the host national care is below the TRICARE standard. Some high-risk pregnancies may also be granted authorization for storknesting at Landstuhl after review by TRICARE International SOS and the local medical treatment facility. If you are interested in the program or you are unsure whether or not you meet the criteria for the Storknest Program, please contact TRICARE International SOS (ISOS) at +44-20-8762-8384 for additional information.

The OB/GYN Clinic, Labor and Delivery, and Mother-Baby staff at Landstuhl is thrilled to be a part of your birthing experience!

We want you and your family to have a smooth transition before, during, and after the delivery of your baby or babies. If you have questions about the Storknest Program, please feel free to contact our Storknest coordinator at +49-6371-9464-7875 if calling from outside of Germany or 06371-9464-7875 if calling from within Germany. You can also email us at usarmy.LRMCStorknestProgram@mail.mil. The LRMC Storknest coordinator can email you a Storknest Welcome Packet upon request.

Where do I get started on my LRMC Storknesting experience? For our remote patients, once your referral has been authorized by TRICARE International SOS for you to deliver at LRMC, you will receive an email with a welcome packet from our Storknest Coordinators along with your initial appointments at Landstuhl. TRICARE International SOS will provide you with information to help coordinate your travel arrangements.

For our high-risk OB patients in the Europe and Africa region who are granted authorization to storknest, your medical TDY orders for entering the Storknesting program will be prepared by your sponsor's unit. TRICARE International SOS will assist you to coordinate with the appropriate personnel at the sponsor’s unit to have your orders completed. Once the referral has been placed to Landstuhl, the Storknest Coordinator will send you an email with a welcome packet along with your initial appointments at Landstuhl.

How do I get my baby’s passport processed? It is important to start processing the birth registration paperwork as soon as possible. The Storknest coordinator will email a birth registration packet to you prior to your arrival at LRMC. Please read and complete the forms that are in the packet before your arrival at LRMC.

Please note that you will have to remain in Germany up to 3 weeks after your delivery to obtain the baby’s passport.

Once you arrive at LRMC, please call the birth registration office at DSN 590-7053 Commercial 06371-9464-7053 and let them know that you are a Storknester and they will schedule a preregistration appointment for you. Please bring the completed birth registration packet to the appointment, along with the following items:

• Passports for BOTH PARENTS
• ORIGINAL birth certificates of BOTH Parents
• ORIGINAL Marriage Certificate. If parents are not married, a sworn affidavit from the father is required to place the father’s name on the birth certificate. This form can be obtained from the passport office and notarized at the legal office
• ORIGINAL Divorce Decree (from any previous marriages)
• Money order of $100 for Report of Birth and $105 for Non-Command Sponsored Passport
• Consular Report of Birth of an American Citizen Abroad

What do I do upon arrival? Please call or stop by the OB/GYN clinic the first day you arrive to let the Storknest coordinator know you have made it safely to Germany. You may call +49-6371-9464-7875 if calling from outside of Germany or 06371-9464-7875 if calling from within Germany. You can also email us at usarmy.LRMCStorknestProgram@mail.mil. The OB/GYN clinic is open Monday – Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. - noon. The clinic is closed all Federal holidays. Let the front desk know that you are a Storknester and they will direct you to the Storknest coordinator.

Who do I contact if I have any questions or issues come up? During your stay with us please direct any and all questions or comments to the Storknest coordinator. If you have any urgent medical issues or think you may be in labor, please contact Labor and Delivery at DSN 486-8208 or Commercial 06371-86-8208.

How can I contact other Storknesters? If you sign a release form we can provide your name, room and phone number to the rest of the Storknesters, as well as provide them with your information.

When is my first OB appointment? As soon as you know when you will be arriving at LRMC, contact the Storknest coordinator so they can book your routine OB appointments. We highly encourage you to hand carry your OB medical records and all supporting documents required for your baby's passport on the plane with you instead of checking them with your luggage. Flying on commercial aircraft is usually prohibited after 36 weeks unless you have a letter from a medical provider stating otherwise, so patients will normally be scheduled just prior to the 36 week appointment to come and storknest and stay until after delivery.

Is there a possibility that I may have to deliver off base? There are occasional times when LRMC Labor and Delivery is so busy that there may not be open delivery rooms at the time you go into labor. On these rare occasions, you would be transferred to the nearest hospital with rooms available. LRMC has a list of local hospitals that serve as an excellent alternative. If you happen to be diverted to a local hospital and would like a Patient Liaison to assist you please call DSN 590-4847/4848/6721 or Commercial 06371-9464-4847/4848/6721. After duty hours, please call the Patient Gateway DSN 590-314-590-5890 or 0 6371-9464-5890.

How long will I be staying in the hospital once I have delivered? The typical hospital stay for a vaginal or cesarean birth is 48 hours from delivery. Your baby will be scheduled with a 2-3 day follow up and then 2 week follow-up appointment. Prior to leaving Germany, please ensure that you obtain a “fit to fly letter” for your baby (obtained at the newborn follow up appointment) and for yourself after discharge (the Storknest Coordinator can assist with this).
